There are a plethora of reasons to visit our beautiful city. Perhaps you are visiting Austin for one of our many world-renowned festivals such as ACL or SXSW. Maybe you are traveling to Austin for business to meet with Dell, IBM, or Apple executives. It could be that you just love BBQ, and you want to cross Texas brisket off your food bucket list. Or you could be traveling to Austin because you are the parent of a teenager who has been dreaming of being a Longhorn since he or she was in grade school. You could be traveling to Austin for a college visit.
Your child is not the only one who dreams of wearing burnt orange and cheering on the Longhorns to another victory. The University of Texas at Austin has the eighth-largest single-campus enrollment in the U.S. They enroll over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and the university is one of the largest employers in the city.
The University of Texas also enjoys monetary support from alumni and other donors. They have the second-largest endowment among higher-education institutions. Who is in the first place? Perhaps you have heard of Harvard?
The Longhorn sports teams have earned many Big 12 and NCAA rankings throughout the years, and celebrities wearing burnt-orange suits have been spotted on the sidelines at their games. The football stadium has a seating capacity of over 100,000, making it one of the largest stadiums in the state of Texas.
The University of Texas in Austin is home to the only presidential library on a university campus. It is home to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum on the eastern side of the main campus. The school has seven other museums and seventeen other libraries on sight, making it the seventh-largest academic library in the country.
Your student will be able to choose from more than 100 undergraduate and 170 graduate degrees, but you better hope that your child is academically gifted. The university is one of the most selective colleges in the country. Their acceptance rate is 36.5 percent.
The college has the luxury of being picky with the students they let in because it consistently ranks high on the list of the country’s top universities. According to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings, is tied for 15th for the best public university in the country. It has also been listed as one of the top public universities in the world. The University of Texas is considered to be a Public Ivy, a term coined by author Richard Moll in a book by the same name published in the 1980s. This means that the university gives students an ivy-league experience with a public school price.
Your student will have over 1,300 clubs and organizations to choose from when attending the University of Texas, and they also enjoy an active Greek system.
Of course, part of the collegiate experience extends outside the campus grounds. When you schedule a university visit, make sure you take time to check out Austin as well.
You and your teen will enjoy the abundance of trails, lakes, swimming holes, and parks in and around Austin. Take time to hike the Greenbelt. Do a little rock climbing. Try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding. Pause in the evening to watch the bats leave their perches under the Congress Avenue Bridge.
Purchase a Keep Austin Weird or Longhorns t-shirt from a boutique on South Congress. Of course, your teen is going to need a pair of cowboy boots to fit in at U of T. He may need a cowboy hat too.
Austin is home to many outdoor murals. Your teen will want to pose in front of them all while giving the “horns up!” signal. Make sure you take a pic with Willie while you are visiting Austin. You won’t have to look too hard to find our native son. There are Willie Nelson statues and murals scattered throughout our city.
One thing that you will quickly discover about Austin is that it is a large metropolitan area with a small-town feel. We have many different neighborhoods that you and your teen will want to explore in all four corners of the city. You may find that hiring a car service is the best way to travel around Austin.
